However, runners are allowed to advance one or more bases as the result of plays that were ongoing while the ball was alive. The pitcher is the player designated to throw the pitch to the batter. The batter is the one tasked to strike the ball—or not—depending which course he chooses. The goal of the offensive team is to have its batter transition to a runner position, and have the runners advance.  The defensive team needs to prevent offensive players from advancing to runners, and progress through the bases. Once the batter becomes a runner, and completely runs through all bases, the team scores a run.  When three offensive players are legally put out, the team then takes the field, and the teams switch offensive and defensive roles.
